This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared Book Club – First Meeting

Join us in preparing for the High Holidays by reading This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared by Rabbi Alan Lew. Each book club meeting will stand alone - attend just one, or join us for all of them!

A classic book about the Jewish calendar,  This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared outlines an idea of the Days of Awe (the period preceding Rosh Hashanah up to Yom Kippur) as one continuous emotional arc, giving us tools for experiencing the holidays this period encompasses as a single spiritual journey rather than disconnected individual days. Beginning with Tisha B'Av, the book walks chronologically through the High Holidays - the preparatory month of Elul, Slichot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot - giving readers tools to engage in the deep spiritual work of this period.

In our first meeting, we will discuss through Chapter 3, which takes us through the introduction all the way up to Tisha B'Av. This year, Tisha B'Av begins at sunset on July 26th (check out this event if you want to mark Tisha B'Av with Jconnect and the Kavana Cooperative!).
