6:30pm to 8:00pm“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
These famous words by Jewish poet Emma Lazarus’ sonnet “The New Colossus” are inscribed on the Statute of Liberty, which has served as a beacon of hope for over a century for new immigrants to our shores. Jews, the eternal outsider, have been the epitome of the immigrant story throughout our history, in our biblical laws toward strangers, our exiles and migrations, and in our more recent history, both serving as welcomer, and blockade, to modern immigrants. In current political theater, immigration has been a controversial topic, whether they come from Mexico, Syria, or many other lands. Where do we stand on current immigration policies? Where do we take a stand, drawing from our long history and values?
Join other Jconnectors for a meaningful discussion of text, history, and modern issues surrounding immigration.
